1999 Foliage Report #11

October 6, 1999
Peak foliage conditions have rapidly developed in western Maine, northern New Hampshire, northeastern and central Vermont, and portions of the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains in New York. Much cooler temperatures have helped to bring about the height of fall color to these locations. In addition to the peak areas, high color is being reported in a good portion of inland Maine, northern New Hampshire, much of Vermont, and in both northern sections and the Catskill Mountain region in New York.

On Monday and Tuesday (October 4th and 5th), portions of northern New York and northern New England reported snow and sleet. Some of the wintry precipitation was heavy in higher elevations. Up to seven inches were observed in some areas. Temperatures are expected to warm slightly, resulting in ideal leaf-peeping conditions.

Leaf drop has picked up slightly due to windy conditions and the frozen precipitation. However, there have not been any reports of high leaf drop to this point, which is allowing for ideal viewing conditions.
