October 23, 2002 Great foliage viewing can be had in much of New England, most of upstate New York and central and northern Pennsylvania. The only areas past peak include northwestern Maine, extreme northern New Hampshire and northeastern Vermont. Usually by this late date in October, a good portion of the region would be past peak. This year's foliage season is rather unprecedented, with many of The Foliage Network spotters, who are lifelong residents of the region, never recalling such a late season. Don't let this opportunity pass you by! There are many Bed & Breakfasts and Inns with openings, so get out there and enjoy the foliage! Leaf drop is mostly moderate throughout the region with high leaf drop in some of the areas reporting peak to past peak conditions. If you are looking for some scenic drives, check out the following. In Maine: Anywhere along Route 1 along the Atlantic Ocean coastline; Route 27 from Belgrade Lakes to Hallowell. In New Hampshire: Route 25 from Plymouth west to Haverhill; Route 11 from Farmington to Glendale; Route 109 from Brookfield to Sandwich; Route 11 from Claremont to Sunapee. In Vermont: Historic Route 7A in southern Vermont; Route 30 from Brattleboro to West Townshend. In New York: Route 28 from Old Forge to Blue Mountain Lake; Route 30 from Long Lake north to Tupper Lake; Route 73 from Route 87 to Saranac Lake; Route 28 from Route 357 to Phoenicia; Route 12 from Sherburne south to Binghamton. In Pennsylvania: Route 171 from Lanesboro to Union Dale. This information provided by Marek D. Rzonca, The Foliage Network.
