While the number of reports of early color has been high, especially
for this time of year, the amount of foliage color is still
in the "little/no change" range. Many of the higher
elevations are very close to crossing into the "low color"
category (11-30 percent change). Much of the early color has
been reported in various maple species (especially swamp maples)
and some dogwoods. Also showing early color are trees in swampy
areas or where trees are in standing water.
The weather in much of the Northeast has taken a break from
the cloudy, soggy conditions experienced through much of the
summer. If that trend continues, we could be in store for a
great foliage season!
