Foliage Report #11

October 6, 2004

October has arrived and so to has a great deal of fall color in parts of the Northeast. Much of northern
New England is aglow with high to peak color. The same holds true in the Adirondack Mountains in
northern New York, the Catskill Mountains in southeast New York and the extreme northeast corner of
Pennsylvania. Elsewhere in the region, foliage change is low to moderate.

Here are some of the places to visit now for great foliage displays.

Maine - In extreme northern Maine, State Route 11 from Fort Kent, through Eagle Lake southward to
Ashland, Maine. Also in extreme northern Maine, State Route 161 from Fort Kent to Caribou. In western Maine, State Route 16 from the New Hampshire border east through Rangeley to Stratton, Maine and U.S. Route 201 from the Canadian border south through Jackman to West Forks, Maine.

New Hampshire - The White Mountains (northern New Hampshire) including the famed Kancamagus Highway (State Route 112). Pinkham Notch (near Mt. Washington - the highest peak in the Northeast U.S. In northern New Hampshire, U.S. Route 302 from Bethlehem to North Conway and State Route 26 from Dixville Notch to Errol, New Hampshire. U.S. Route 2 from Jefferson to Gorham, New Hampshire.

Vermont - In northern Vermont, U.S. Route 2 from the New Hampshire border through Danville to
Montpelier; U.S. Route 5 from Coventry south through Barton, Lyndonville, St. Johnsbury and Barnet;
the famed State Route 100 from Newport south through Morrisville, Stowe, Waitsfield and Warren. In southern Vermont, U.S. Route 4 from Rutland east to Killington.

New York - In the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York, State Route 86 from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake; State Route 73 from the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) west to Lake Placid; State Route 3 from Saranac Lake to Tupper Lake; and State Route 28 from Old Forge to Blue Mountain Lake. In southeast New York, State Route 23 through Windham; State Route 30 from State Route 42 to State Route 17.

Leaf drop in areas where the foliage has reached high to peak color, leaf drop is moderate. Elsewhere
in the region, leaf drop is mostly low.
