October 25, 2006
The 2006 foliage season has been relatively short-lived when compared to past seasons. A large portion of the region is already past peak Some of those areas now past peak don't normally reach the end of the foliage season until early November. The combination of unseasonably cool temperatures and a couple of rain and wind storms are likely causes for the rapid progression. Some areas went from high color to past peak in one week. Good foliage viewing can still be had in extreme southeast New Hampshire, central and eastern Massachusetts, most of Connecticut and Rhode Island, western and downstate New York, and much of central and southern Pennsylvania and the state of New Jersey. Most of these areas are at or near peak. Get out and enjoy the leaves before they are gone!
Leaf drop is high to nearly complete in those areas past peak. Elsewhere, leaf drop is mostly moderate.
